Project Nimbus

In 2021, Google and Amazon won the 1.2 billion dollar, 7-year with option to extend, contract to build Nimbus, which provides the national cloud computing infrastructure for the Israeli government, military, and major arms manufacturers.

  • Through Nimbus, Google and Amazon create local Israeli companies to build and operate six data cloud computing centers located on Israeli soil and subject only to Israeli law.
  • Google Cloud will provide the Israeli Ministry of Defense its own “landing zone” – or secure entry point for multiple military entities to store and process data, and access artificial intelligence (AI) services. (TIME, 4/12/2024)
  • The Google Cloud platform provides services including: machine learning, facial detection, speech transcription, object tracking, and sentiment analysis. (Intercept, 7/24/2022)
  • Nimbus users include the Israeli Ministry of Defense, the Israeli Defense Forces, the Settlement Division, and arms manufacturers that are mandated to use Google Cloud such as Israel Aerospace Industries and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. These companies provide aircrafts, drones, missiles, and other weapons to kill over 34,000 Palestinians. (TIME, 4/12/2024)
  • Google is barred from shutting down Nimbus or denying access to the cloud platform even if subject to international boycott campaigns. (Times of Israel, 5/24/2021)

Google Cloud enables “the consumption of advanced computing services by the Israeli market… and help promote the ecosystem of the State of Israel in the fields of cloud technologies.”
